“It was in the middle of winter at the peak of a Sydney buyers market that John helped me buy my first property. Now I’m the type of guy who feels uncomfortable bargaining over a TV from Jb-Hi Fi, so the thought of negotiating for a house was really scary. I came to John with a property in mind. He started the process by visiting the property with me, calmly but confidently asking the seller important questions while I did my best to pretend that I wasn’t excited by what I was liking about the house.

Next, John wrote up a detailed independent property evaluation, and then he walked me through the steps of how he reached his estimated property value. Importantly, he asked what features were most important to me, as he explained that we need to balance what I would value in a property with what the market would value as we came to agree on how much I was willing to pay.

John offered for me to do as little or as much face to face negotiating as I liked. Being the type of guy I am, I let him do it all. After a few days, I decided I wanted to make the offer. A few anxious nights followed as John worked behind the scenes. At around lunchtime on a Thursday afternoon, he called me letting me know that the seller had agreed to a price $30,000 below what I was willing to play. After I had thought about all the things I could do with the extra money I had just saved, John guided me step by step through all finalising the deal, as he recommended a building report, a pest report and a conveyancer who he knew he could trust.
